On 11 July 1990, three foundation partners set up the Museum Schloss Moyland Foundation with the significant participation of the then Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, Johannes Rau. Schloss Moyland was brought into the foundation by the von Steengracht family, who had owned it for more than 230 years. The collectors Hans and Franz Joseph van der Grinten donated their art collection and archival material on Joseph Beuys. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia laid the financial foundation for the reconstruction and secures the annual financial basis of the museum’s operations.

The Museum Schloss Moyland was opened on 24 May 1997.
