Female View

Fashion Photographers from Modernity to the Digital Age

24 September 2022 – 15 January 2023

The exhibition focuses on women‘s fashion photography, which is often unjustly neglected. For decades, this medium was shaped by female photographers, most of whom worked for magazines such as Harper‘s Bazaar and Vogue and thus influenced the style of their time as well as other artists. Many of the female fashion photographers on display are still little known to the general public. The focus of many exhibitions on fashion photography has so far been on the male view of
the female body. Yet the viewers of these images are mostly female.

In this context, it is also possible to trace the social and political changes that have taken place in the body images and fashions of the various decades. Today, the production of fashion images is more diverse than it was in the 20th century.

Female View is presented on the so-called Beuys floor. Early drawings by Joseph Beuys on „fashion themes“ (textile patterns, clothing designs, shoes, hangers) as well as a participatory (selfie) offer for artistic self-styling by means of clothing and fashion (hat, waistcoat, fur coat) will be part of the show.
