Beuys in Italy

17th May to 13th September 2020

Beuys had a special relationship with Italy; he was often there and exhibited in Naples, Rome and at the Venice Biennale, among others. Already as a young soldier, when he was stationed in Foggia (Apulia) for several months, Beuys had come to know and love the country.

Since the beginning of the 1970s, he had created numerous projects and works associated with Italy. Some of these can be seen in the exhibition, including the famous photo for La rivoluzione siamo Noi,as well as the Capri Battery, in which Beuys combined a bright-yellow light bulb with a real lemon: electricity and enlightenment from nature.

Difesa della natura is an artistic project with an ecological and social focus, which Beuys realised in the Italian region of Marche over the course of several years.

The presentation also includes the early lithograph Adriatic Wine Market (1946/47) and a selection of works on paper from the 1950s, as well as roughly 100 photographs, posters, multiples and objects from the 1970s and 80s, which provide insight into the activities Beuys developed in Italy.
