Opałka studierte zunächst Lithographie, machte dann aber einen Abschluss an der Kunsthochschule in Warschau. In seinem Frühwerk schuf er abstrakte und monochrome Gemälde. Ab 1965 begann er sein Hauptwerk 1965/1-Infinity, indem er fortlaufend Zahlen schrieb, beginnend links oben nach rechts unten. In der Ausstellung ist die Schallplatte 1965/1-Infinity zu sehen, die die gesprochenen Zahlen zweier Werke wiedergibt und die aus der Zählung von 1.987.108 bis 2.154.452 besteht. Opałka war mit seinen Werken auf der Documenta 6 vertreten und es wurde auf der Biennale in São Paulo gezeigt. Er erhielt zudem zahleiche Preise und Ehrungen für sein Werk. Bis zu seinem Tod führte er 1965/1-Infinity fort.

Opałka initially studied lithography, but then graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In his early work, he created abstract and monochrome paintings. In 1965, he began his main work 1965/1-Infinity by writing numbers consecutively, starting from the top left to the bottom right. On display in the exhibition is the record 1965/1-Infinity, which reproduces the spoken numbers of two works and consists of the count from 1 987 108 to 2 154 452. Opałka was represented with his works at Documenta 6 and it was shown at the Biennial in São Paulo. He also received numerous prizes and honours for his work. He continued his work 1965/1-Infinity until his death.
