On Kawara

*1933 Kariya, Japan
†2014 New York City, USA

DE

On Kawara was a visual artist and representative of conceptual art, an artistic movement that was established internationally from the mid-1960s and focussed on the reduction of the art object into clear structures and information. On Kawara reduced his works to a system he developed himself, which enabled him to transform the temporal duration and spatial location of his life into art.

On 4.01.1996 he produced the first of his Date Paintings, which consist of a monochrome canvas in red, blue or grey with only the date painted in white. Together they form the Today series and are available in different sizes. They were always produced in the same way, following the same creative process. If Kawara did not finish a work by midnight, he destroyed it.

On Kawara produced several thousand of these works, which can be found in more than 130 locations around the world. From 1970 to 1979, he worked on the series I AM STILL ALIVE, for which he periodically sent telegrams to friends and colleagues.
